Christian Debt Counseling
Is it Fair?
Wait a minute. Christian debt counseling? What about the Christian principle that says you should love your brother and help everyone? If a company is offering counseling but is only offering it to Christians, how fair is that? To make this decision, here’s what you need to know.
Christian debt counseling is only offered to Christians and they have several very logical reasons for doing this. One basic principle in the Christian religion is to live debt-free. The Bible commands us to live simply, owing nothing to anyone.
Everyone makes mistakes and so do Christians but their intent is good and their hearts are in the right place. To sign up for Christian counseling, you must sign an agreement stating that staying debt-free is your belief and you will do your best to do this.
When a person becomes a Christian, they are agreeing to follow Jesus Christ and give Him 100% of their life. This sounds good but the problem is that we live in a world where material possessions are shoved in our faces 24/7. It is hard to resist these temptations and sometimes even the most devout Christians can get their priorities out of order.
When attending Christian counseling, a major part will be about getting priorities put back in their proper place with God in the #1 spot. Counseling will focus on being content with whatever God has provided you with and making the commitment to stay out of debt from that point on.
Most Christian debt counselors are advertised under non-profit debt consolidation. This gives people the impression that it is going to be free and is probably the reason why many think it is unfair that you have to be a Christian to receive the counseling.
This is not true.
Many do operate from a church and there are many Christian counselors that feel like it is a ministry that God has called them to do, so you might find a free Christian debt counselor, but most will charge a fee like other debt counselors.
It is important to keep this in mind when looking for a counselor. If an agency advertises that they are a Christian agency make sure you check them out. There are many agencies who will use the title “Christian debt counseling” to give you a false sense of security. Be on the lookout for these types of agencies.
Now you know that most Christian debt counselors are not free and Christians are not getting something that is not available to everyone. You can also see why you must be a Christian to receive the counseling. Anyone who is not a Christian will not agree to put Christ first in their lives and to live a debt-free life from that point on.
